Maun Lodge celebrates 20 years

Maun Lodge celebrates 20 years
LOOKING BACK: John Wellio

Synonymous with quality and first class service, Maun Lodge prides itself as being one of the top establishments in Maun.

The high-ranking hotel celebrated 20 years of existence in a glitzy ceremony last Saturday.

Established in 1999 by four shareholders, who are also Directors, John Wellio, his wife Ikwatheng Wellio, John Riley and Keith Munger, the hotel originally boasted 30 bedrooms, a 120-seater conference room and 39 staff members.

It has come a long way in the last two decades, something John Wellio was quick to highlight in his speech.

“When we started this hotel with 30 rooms, we were considered to be the biggest. But we were restricted because we had very small land. Over time our neighbours understood our need and agreed to sell us their land and we expanded,” he reminisced.

Today, Maun Lodge has 140 rooms, three restaurants and three conference rooms, ranging from a 60-seater to a 500-seater.

The hotel currently employs a staff contingent of 143, made up of 142 Botswana citizens.

The establishment has also acquired Mokoro Lodge in Maun, which has 36 rooms and 19 staff members.

Wellio also made mention of the company’s commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility, noting they donate to charity organisations and deserving cases.

Maun Lodge also offers spaces for internships for student from Maun Technical College and other schools across the country.

He attributed their success to the government of Botswana, independent organisations as well as individuals who showered them with support throughout their journey.

The ceremony ended with Long Service Awards for the employees who have served for 10, 15 and 20 years.

One of the award recipients, Ebbn Tshikitshi expressed his gratitude to the hotel’s founders. “Maun Lodge is a busy hotel.

You need to keep up with the business but I’m glad I have managed to stick around for 10 years,” he said happily.
