This week, Celeb Edition caught up with the latest singing sensation to take the local music scene by storm, Ms Abbey.

The 27-year-old Zimbabwean born singer is best known for her 2019 hit ‘Vacation’, a track that earned the artist a YAMA nomination for ‘Best RnB single’.

Indeed with two other nominations – ‘Best New Comer’ and ‘Best Female’ – the new kid on the block had a breakthrough year to remember.

Q. How does it feel to be nominated for three YAMAs so early in your career?

A. Being nominated three times is a great achievement for me as an artist considering that I only released my single ‘Vacation’ last year.

It shows growth and I’m thankful that Batswana have embraced my music.

Q. What do you consider your biggest achievement in music so far?

A. Having shot my first video for my debut single last year.

To an extent I never believed I could pull it off but I got the chance to work with one of the best Videographers in Botswana, Director Mo.

And I got to be sponsored by Sa Lorato Bed and Breakfast, hair essentials and big companies who were supportive of me and sponsored my music video.

Q. Who would you like to work with locally?

A. I would like to collaborate with ATI.

I have always admired him before I even got into the music industry.

He is very talented and I would love to experience working with him and learn a thing or two.

Q. What is the hardest thing about being in the spotlight?

A. The hardest thing is that there are certain things that you have to keep private.

You have to protect your brand at all costs but at the same time it’s not about what people think about you.

Q. What do you get up to when you are not making music?

A. I hold a BA (Honours) in Broadcasting and Journalism so when I’m not making music I produce content or write news, sports.

I produced a show called ‘Femme Talk’ on Access TV.

Q. If wishes came true what would you wish for?

A. My wish is to perform in the biggest shows in South Africa, like Casper Nyovest’s ‘Fill UP the Stadium’ because I feel it is internationally recognised now.

Q. What five items do you always carry in your handbag?

A. (Laughing) That would be my phone, power bank, lipstick, perfume and hand lotion.
