The karate kid

For the last 11 years, Karate has played an integral part in Dan Batlhomile’s life.

Having honed his skills since the age of 10, the 21-year-old Molepolole native has his sights firmly fixed on global domination; he is confident that one day he will be a World Champion.

With a Gold Medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Karate Championships in Durban, South Africa, already under his belt, the youngster’s confidence is not without merit.

Taking Voice Sport on a trip down memory lane, Batlhomile revealed he was introduced to the sport that would shape his life by a close friend.

“My friend, Thebe Duna made me to love this sport back in 2009. He was really good and passionate then I followed never thinking that I will be the best one day. I worked really hard since then,” declared the 2019 Africa Games Bronze medalist, who attributed his rise to the top to the guidance of SSKB Kofukan Karate Club and three individuals in particular.

“I believe this club has crafted my skill as an upcoming karateka. My first instructor, Sensei Andrew Dobolo contributed immensely as we all know that kids are difficult to be taught certain skills. However, Sensei Peter Molefe and Sensei Oratile Caiphus sharpened my talents into a very competitive player,” said Batlhomile, who admitted he still has a long way to go to achieve his ultimate ambition of becoming world champion.

“I am still learning as there is room for improvement, I just have to stay level-headed and more will come.”

Whilst karate commands much of Bathomile’s attention, the young athlete has still found time to pursue his education, although he admits it has not been easy balancing the two.

“I am studying Degree in Banking and Finance currently on my 3rd year. Balancing schoolwork and training has been a problem as the workload is now piling up. Furthermore, these latest unexpected movement restrictions hinder my training as I am forced to train at home.”
