Man accused of raping minor relative

In yet another incident of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) to further stain the land, a Maun man has been remanded in custody accused of raping a close nine-year-old relative.
20-year-old Joseph Ngombe of Shashe ward was arraigned before Maun Magistrates Court on Monday after allegedly sexually assaulting his relation on 30 November.
According to facts brought before court, the girl’s teacher raised the alarm after receiving a report from another student that the minor had been molested.
Ngombe’s plea was reserved to enable him to engage an attorney.
Opposing the suspect’s bail, the Investigating Officer (IO), Detective Constable, Botshelo Betty Kesego revealed investigations were at initial stages.
“We are yet to collect statements from witnesses, of which some live in the same yard with the accused person. We are of a view that he will tamper with witnesses,” stated Kesego.
“The victim, who is a minor, is staying with him in the same house. I have tried to find her a shelter but it was full. I have handed the issue over to social welfare offices. If granted bail the child’s safety will be jeopardized,” continued the IO.
Kesego duly got her wish as Maun Chief Magistrate, Thebeetsile Mulalo ordered Ngombe be incarcerated for the safety of the minor child.
The accused will be transported to Francistown for mandatory quarantine and is due back in court on 18th December for status update.
