  • Ghetto to get state-of-the-art amusement park within a year

The often heard complaint ‘there’s nothing to do in Francistown for fun apart from drinking’ could soon be a gripe of the past as work on a multi-million Pula amusement park in the second city begins.

As well as adding some much needed variety to Ghetto’s entertainment scene, the Nyangabgwe Recreational Square will also boost the northern capital’s creaking aesthetics.

Located along the A1, in the shadow of the iconic Nyangabgwe Hill, at a plot popularly known as Mummies, the new resort’s main attraction will be an amusement park, featuring a number of rides including a huge rollercoaster and water slides.

Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony on Wednesday, Francistown Mayor, Godisang Radisigo boldly predicted the rollercoaster would be visible from almost anywhere in the city.

“It’ll be a great facelift for the city and a potential land mark,” he declared.

The project, undertaken by Petrohyper (Pty) Ltd, a 100 percent citizen owned company based in Botswana, commenced on 4 April, with de-bushing and digging of trenches already well underway. Its first phase is expected to be completed in exactly one year’s time.

This includes an art and craft centre, commercial centre and an indoor entertainment area.

The recreational centre will also include quadbike trails, two five-a-side football pitches, a multi functional hall, complete with gymnasium and facilities for water sports.

Giving an overview of the project, PH’s Head of Operations, Tebogo Mathodi said the development will add to the aesthetic value of the city and also bring much needed infrastructure which promotes the overall living standards of the people.

She further said when fully operational the total number of jobs created is expected to be over 500.

Mathodi also noted this would be the first of its kind in the north of the country and thus is expected to attract not just Francistowners but those in the surrounding areas as well.

“The site is located near the city center, and we hope by erecting an amusement ride like a rollercoaster, which can be spotted almost anywhere in the city, will be a great facelift for the city and can be a potential landmark,” she concluded brightly.
