EYES ON THE BALL: Tennis action returns on Friday

Botswana Tennis Association (BTA) President Oaitse Thipe said that they will host an Open and a Grassroots Tennis tournaments in Gaborone and Selebi-Phikwe respectively this Friday.

“The turnout of players has not been bad since we returned from the Covid-19 break which affected most sports codes in the world,” he said.

Thipe told Voice Sport in an interview that the grassroots tournament will be played in Selebi-Phikwe by children aged between 8 and 14.

“All winners in this tournament will be awarded certificates,” Thipe said.

“However, the Gaborone Open will obviously have something up for grabs for both winners in the male and female singles categories. Winners will pocket P2,000 while runners up and semifinalists will all go home with P1500 and P1000 respectively,” the BTA President said.

For the doubles; men’s and women’s double winners will get P1, 500 per pair, and all the doubles runners-up will get a P750 compensation. Lastly, the mixed doubles winners will get P800 while the mixed doubles finalist will collect P400.

Thipe further told this publication that they have partnered with Rhodes Quality to power their tournaments.

“It is too hot these days and Rhodes has come on board to provide our players with refreshments such as water and energy drinks,” said Thipe.

Meanwhile, the tennis extravaganza resumes this Friday at 1430hours and will go on until Sunday.
