ONLINE FUNNY MAN: Dona BW

DONA BW is the latest break-out comedian to make his name through online videos.

A relatively new player in the industry, the fresh-faced funnyman already boasts a formidable following and looks set for a bright future.

Q. What has been keeping you busy during lockdown?

I have been working.

Creating and working on new material.

I have also been researching a lot on how other comedians are making it out there.

For me this was the time to reflect so that when things get back to normal, if they ever do, we come out with fresh and strong material for our followers and clients.

Q. Have you always been into comedy?

I have always been the funny guy in the group but I never took it seriously; you know how it is!

It was only this February that I decided to actually send it out to Batswana and my goodness the reception we received and the support has been overwhelming and unbelievable at times.

Q. Career wise, if not for comedy, which path would you have chosen?

I am not an 8-to-5 type of person, so I don’t think I would have gone for formal employment.

I would have maybe opened some sort of business, selling legal stuff of course.

However, I feel like comedy is a calling for me – I was destined to do it, one way or the other.

So I really don’t know.

Q. Do you find your own jokes funny?

Not really hey!

I actually realise that I am funny when I see people laughing at what it is I delivered.

I actually don’t try to be funny, it just happens.

I swear to you I am always just myself.

Like I said, I think I was destined for this.

Q. If your partner ever caught you cheating, what is the first thing you would say to them?

(Laughs) I would probably say something like, “Wait a minute, let’s talk. This is my cousin I just realised yesterday that this is my cousin and we are catching up. She is even a lesbian, she is not into men. Trust me babe.”

Gosh it’s a hard one.

I wouldn’t confess on the spot that is for sure.

That is not to say I condone cheating though!

Q. When was the last time you cried and why?

Look I am guy so I hardly cry but it gets tough sometimes, so I do sit back, introspect and cry behind closed doors.

I cry more often actually, maybe once a month.

In fact I think everyone in their own little corner has that one thing they are dealing with one way or the other.

Q. How has the Covid-19 pandemic affected your business?

I was scheduled to have my first show just before lockdown.

But then unfortunately everything went south.

Most of our business has been affected and the worst thing is we don’t know when things will get back to normal.

The events industry is literally on its knees hence why we turn to social media to keep pushing.

But it’s tough!

Q. Who is the person who holds all your secrets?

That should be Carter, my business partner and close friend.

I have few secrets though (hahaha)!

Q. What is the one thing you do when no one is looking?

I impersonate celebrities whilst looking at myself in the mirror.

I try to act and speak like them and I just crack up, alone.

Q. Who is your celebrity crush?

The other half of Khoisan, Oratile Kofa.

If I was to ever meet her I would be single, immediately!

Q. Five things people don’t know about you?

  • I am a good driver, the best. But my license is three months old
  • I am great at chess
  • I am actually a painter
  • People don’t know how old I am
  • I am always laughing at other people. A lot!
