HIGH FLYER: Game Mothibi

Mothibi wins top international post

In an exciting first for local sport, Game Mothibi has been appointed Africa Representative for International Working Group (IWG) on Women and Sport New Zealand Secretariat.

The prestigious organisation prides itself on being the world’s largest network dedicated to ‘Empowering women and girls – Advancing Sport’.

The four-year posting marks a new high for Mothibi, who boasts a wealth of administrative experience, both locally, with the Botswana National Sport Council, and internationally, as IWG’s Secretary General.

Speaking to Voice Sport, Mothibi said she will be representing all women in sports in Africa.

“I have to make sure Women’s Sport Africa Network (WSAN) become functional and there are some activities for women in sport, promote and profile them. I will be monitoring progress of women in sports from athletes, officials, administrators and fighting their battles. We are faced with challenges of gender inequality and racism so I have to ensure there is a conducive environment for their international competition,” she explained.

Although the role was not meant to start until next year, Mothibi’s rein was brought forward due to WSAN Chairperson, Matilda Mwaba’s untimely passing earlier this year.

Mothibi revealed she is currently dealing with the issue of two Namibian sprinters banned from the Olympic 400m event. The duo, Christine Mboma and Beatrice Masilingi are said to have testosterone levels that surpassed International Olympics Committee (IOC) regulations.

She further admitted Africa still lags behind in terms of female participation in sport, especially at leadership level on the international stage.

“I will fight to increase their numbers,” vowed Mothibi, who jetted out for Tokyo, Japan on Tuesday, where she will be working with the Olympics Broadcasting Services covering Golf.
