FRIGHTENING SIGHT: A human skull found between Karowe mine and Letlhakane village

A human skull was found deep in the bush between Letlhakane village and Karowe mine on Saturday afternoon.

According to Letlhakane Station Commander, Michael Maphephu, the skull, which still contained most of its teeth, was discovered by a member of the public, who immediately alerted the police to his grisly find.

“Our officers were doing routine patrols when they received information that there is a skull suspected to be of a human being in the bush. They went there and took it,” revealed Maphephu, adding they also found rusty old pots and tattered clothes discarded with the skull.

“There were also signs that fires had been lit in the area,” continued the police boss, who admitted the cops were stumped as to the identity of the dead person.

“There are no missing person’s reports in my jurisdiction. I urge people to always keep in touch with their relatives. In our area people leave their homes to work in the cattle post, so always make sure those people have arrived at the said cattle posts.

“It is a long process to identify the skull’s owner unless someone comes forth saying they have a missing person then we take their blood for DNA,” explained the police boss, who refused to speculate on time of death but admitted it probably happened ‘a while ago’.

Speculation in the mining town is that the deceased is likely to be an illegal immigrant, as they are known to make camp in the bush.
