Kanye armed robbery trial postponed to November 2022

*AOJ has no money to work on weekends

The trial of three men accused of killing a police officer during an armed robbery in Kanye in January 2015 has been postponed to November 2022.

This was after Justice Zain Kebonang proposed that the matter be heard during weekends since his court did not have open slots for the trial to continue and be concluded within a few months.

However, it emerged that the Administration of Justice has no finances to pay staff to work on weekends.

The State intended to call 23 witnesses but over 15 of them had already testified whilst some of the evidence was admitted.

Evans Mhiwatiwa, Gaofenngwe Lovy Seitiso, Thuso Square Tankomane, and Mayibongwe Moyo are facing several counts of armed robbery, attempted murder and murder.

It is alleged that the quartet used guns to rob Rohserville Investments (Cashloan) an amount of P87,000.00, a laptop, and a motor vehicle among other items.

It is alleged that the four men then robbed customers of the Cashloan items ranging from cash to cellphones, before fleeing in a Toyota Ipsum vehicle.

A few moments later they were engaged in a shootout with the police the incident in which  police officer Isaish Focus sustained injuries and died a few days later.

Moyo who is an illegal immigrant has been in custody since 2015 whilst others are out on bail.

Evans Mhiwatiwa is charged separately and will be tried separately.

Onalethata Kambai and Lyndon Mothusi are leading the defence team, while Maikano Maleke is prosecuting.
