MISTAKEN IDENTITY: Kebonye Sephothe

The state has withdrawn rape charges against a 30-year-old Motswana man who allegedly raped a Zimbabwean woman inside Maun police station holding cells in September, 2019.

Kebonye Sephothe was mistakenly placed in the same cell with Sihle Dube who was incarcerated for shoplifting on the 27th of September 2019. It is then that Sephothe allegedly violated Dube.

However state Prosecutor, Khani Khani said police have decided to withdraw the matter because they were struggling to find Dube who is their key witness.

“We decided to withdraw the matter with liberty to reinstate because we are having difficulties finding the complainant, but it can be reinstated whenever we find her,” explained Khani.

Sephothe could not contain his joy when leaving the court as he was heard saying that he hoped police would never find Dube so that he could be free for good.
