A horror accident on the streets of Francistown in the early hours of Tuesday morning resulted in the death of a 10-year-old schoolboy.

Although details of the crash are still unclear, police have confirmed it involved a collision between a combi transporting children to school and a Mercedez Benz.

In a brief interview with The Voice, Francistown Central Station Commander, Lebalang Maniki revealed the accident took place in Monarch at around 7 o’clock in the morning.

“The two vehicles collided, but not head on, at the cross roads by Morula street. There were ten students in the school bus, with the children’s ages ranging from 3 to 16. The ambulance took them to different clinics. A boy aged 10 schooling at Ikhutseng Primary School unfortunately died in one of the clinics,” said Maniki.

The top cop further disclosed that eight of the children were treated and discharged the same day while the ninth, a 10-year-old girl, was discharged from Nyangabgwe Hospital on Wednesday.

“The driver of the school bus was treated and later discharged while the Mercedez Benz driver sustained some serious injuries but was released from the hospital on Wednesday. We are still investigating; yesterday we were running around collecting information,” continued Maniki, adding it was too early to say if any charges would be laid against either driver.

“We cannot say the likely charge it could be as it will be determined by the investigations. But one can be charged with causing death by dangerous driving,” explained the police boss, who revealed this was the third fatal accident recorded in his jurisdiction since the start of the year.
