Spies cry for cash

DIS SPY CHIEF: Magosi

*Accuse Magosi of neglect

The Director General of Directorate of Intelligence and Security (DIS), Brigadier Peter Magosi has dismissed allegations of growing unrest within the spy agency.

Speaking to The Voice on condition of anonymity, DIS insiders accused Magosi of ‘neglecting them’.

The spy agents’ main complaint is their on-going wait for a salary increment, which they claim they have been waiting on since March 2019.

The agents said that following the increment for Botswana Defence Force and Botswana Police Service – dubbed, ‘Ntlole’ – there was hope that the DIS too was set for a pay rise.

“We were told in March last year that our bosses were going to benchmark with other Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries to see their paying structure for institutions such as ours but in six months time it will be two years without a word.”

The source said that it was not fair on their side since they were also playing a major role in protecting the society.

However, DIS Spokesperson, Edward Robert dismissed the allegations, saying his boss has never taken long or neglected his officers.

“The benchmarking exercise referred to was not an end in itself, but rather part of an all-engaging process involving diverse stakeholders. Departmental executive takes staff welfare issues seriously and is continuously working to address them as this is not only integral to their professional development but also staff morale. While we cannot share specific strategic information with the media for obvious reasons, Magosi is committed to addressing all the arising issues accordingly,” maintained Robert, noting that Magosi reaffirmed his commitment towards this during his recent apparancre before the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee.
