A 16-year-old Form 2 girl of Boitshoko Junior School drowned in Ga-Thaone Dam in Molepolole on Sunday evening.
According to Molepolole Station Commander, Superintendent Benedict Matlho, the incident occurred around 4pm when the teenager was swimming with her friends in the dam.
“It was a group of youngsters swimming and we do not know the exact number as some ran away after the incident. After they shouted for help, the fire brigade and the police fished her out and rushed her to the hospital where she was certified dead by a medical doctor,” said the police boss.
Superintendent Matlho further explained that they have already informed both the school and the girl’s family about the tragic incident.
“It’s disturbing as the dam is in the middle of the village. We encourage those nearby to always check what is happening, especially during the rainy season and try to chastise children whenever they find them swimming there. Parents should also care for their children,” said the concerned Superintendent, who went on to highlight that the water from the dam was too deep in certain areas and not clean at all.
