UDC to call for the lifting of SOPE

BDP did what they wanted but there is no need for it – Saleshando

Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) will this week table a motion calling for the lifting of the State of Public Emergency (SOPE).

Addressing members of the media on Monday Leader of Opposition, Dumelang Saleshando said that there was nothing left that warrants the country to be still under SOPE.

Saleshando said that amongst the motions that they were going to tabled included constitutional review, revamping of Ipelegeng, and giving back firearms to wildlife officers.

“Although President Mokgweetsi Masisi promised that motion on constitutional review was to be brought to parliament, we will not wait for them because it is now clear that the Botswana Democratic Party want to bring it in pieces.”

“We don’t want piece meal approach but a holistic review of the constitution ,” he said

The Member of Parliament for Maun West said poaching activities have been on the rise and it was time Wildlife officers are given back their firearms.

“We cannot fight poachers with officers who are not armed,” he noted.

Concerning the Ipelegeng programme, Saleshando said it needs to be revamped to a public works programme, which will empower its workers.

“They have to be taught how to fix potholes and other small jobs instead of being made to slash grass the whole day.”

Meanwhile, Saleshando said that they were also going to put before parliament four Private Members Bills being Media Practitioners (Repeal) Bill, Prisons, Police and Botswana Defence Force Amendment bills.
