WARM GESTURE: Lucas delivering free firewood

Councillor Lucas donates firewood

BDP Specially elected councillor, Modiri Jojo Lucas has donated firewood to 229 households in Francistown since the beginning of Covid-19 lockdown.

Lucas started with Francistown South ward where he lives and expanded his programme to the whole city because of the demand.

He will be donating firewood until September because of its high demand, he has said.

“Some people do not have stoves and rely on firewood to cook while others are unable to refill their gas bottles due to lack of money since they are on lockdown and others cannot get permits to go out and gather firewood. That is why I have decided to help,” explained Lucas in an interview.

The councilor buys firewood in the peripheries of Francistown for P600.00 per load and distributes in the city.

When asked if he was using firewood donation as a campaign tool for the next elections, the staunch Zion Christian Church member said, “I have been inspired by my bishop who has always encouraged us to give to the community.”

His aim, the councillor said, was to put a smile on the face of his neighbours.

“I want to make sure that no fellow Motswana sleeps on an empty stomach due to lack of firewood or cooking gas,” said Lucas. He then went on to urge Batswana to adhere to the government rules and regulations of wearing masks in public spaces and continuously washing hands as demonstrated by President Masisi.

“We might feel that we have contained the virus but we can’t relax when we still have neighbours who are hard hit by the pandemic. I plead with Batswana to pray for South Africa as many of us have their church headquarters in that country,” said Lucas.

Appealing to Batswana to help each other during these tough times, he said that it is during difficult times that the spirit of sharing should prevail.

“With firewood I also deliver mealie meal and chicken feet or cabbage for the less privileged. In a day I donate food to 15 to 20 households,” revealed the young man who suffered a crushing defeat in the 2019 Francistown South parliamentary elections to Wynter Mmolotsi of Alliance For Progressive
