SEIZED: The confiscated truck

A 28-year-old South African truck driver appeared before Maun Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with a single count of Trafficking in Narcotic Drugs.

The suspect, Thapelo Skhosana, who is a delivery man for Woolworths, was allegedly busted by the boys in blue with three packages containing a greenish substance suspected to be dagga.

He was stopped by police officers on duty at Makalamabedi Veterinary Gate on Friday 28 January.

A quick search of Skhosana’s white Mercedes Benz truck reportedly turned up three large seal wrappings, all containing a similar substance inside.

The accused was arrested while the suspected drugs, together with the truck, were seized by the police as exhibits.

The seal wrappings have since been taken to Gaborone for weighing and testing at the Forensic Laboratory.

According to the Prosecutor, Inspector Paul Basupi, the matter was originally scheduled for arraignment on Tuesday.

However, this was postponed until 14 February to allow time to secure the services of a Sotho interpreter for Skhosana.

“He has indicated that he would prefer to be addressed in Sesotho. We have not brought any interpreter for him and therefore decided to postpone the arraignment” explained Basupi.

The South African will remain on remand until then, with his date in court set for Valentine’s Day. He’ll be hoping the Magistrate is in a loving mood!
