Zebras missing in action

MISSING IN ACTION: Mothusi Johnson at COSAFA Cup games

As nations are busy preparing for the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers with international friendly matches, Botswana men’s senior national team- the Zebras, are missing their second consecutive FIFA week without any action.

The Zebras were last in action back in July at the 2021 COSAFA Championships where they performed dismally, exiting the competition at group stages.

The national team endured a tough 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers campaign as they only managed four points after one win, one draw and four losses that included a humiliating 5-0 drubbing at the hands of reigning AFCON Champions, Algeria.

The Zebras are currently sitting on position 149 in the World Rankings.

Despite attempts by South African Football Association (SAFA) to invite the Zebras for a friendly game back in July, they remained idle when Botswana Football Association (BFA) turned dow the invitation.

BFA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Goabaone Taylor, this week however told Voice Sport that they have been working tirelessly to secure friendly matches for the team.

“We have been working to secure friendly matches for the Zebras and we have a few opportunities to consider, the recent one being Comoros and Sierra Leone in the coming month. I bet we will be back in action soon,” she said.

Taylor further said the impending return of the domestic league will present more opportunities to secure more games for the Zebras.

“We expect the domestic league to start soon hence our players will be active again and that will motivate us to secure more games for the boys,” said Taylor.

The Zebras are without a head coach following the departure of coach Adel Amrouche back in June after a string of poor results.

“We are still undertaking a recruitment process and the mandate for the new coach will be in line with job requirements set and communicated through the job profile which is basically to bring results,” Taylor said.
