Broken-hearted builder insists he did not beat ‘cheating’ girlfriend

“I found my wife bending over, with another man standing behind her having sex there and there! I was from Palapye, where I am building some houses, and came to Tonota without telling her only to find her busy with another man,” testified a visibly upset Fabian Dube.

Closing his eyes as if attempting to delete the image from his memory, the 40-year-old Zimbabwean broke down in hysterical tears before Francistown Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

He then produced a pair of dark red panties from his jacket pocket, insisting the underwear was evidence of his woman’s affair.

Dube is charged with unlawful wounding, allegedly beating his girlfriend, Blessing Ndlovu, 23, and stabbing her in the thigh.

Speaking between sobs, the heart-broken builder maintained his innocence, claiming he never laid a finger on Ndlovu.

After ‘rumbling them in the act’, Dube says the other man fled, leaving him alone with his naked lady.

“I picked her panty from the floor and told her to come with me so we find the other guy and take him to the police,” he said.

“When we got to the bar where I suspected the man could be, we saw the police on patrol. My wife ran to them and reported that I was beating her and I was arrested. I do not know why I am the one in trouble because I was going to the police. I did not beat my wife,” the Zimbabwean repeated, his red eyes still wet with tears.

His mood was not helped when the prosecution informed court Dube was in the country illegally, a charge to which he immediately pleaded guilty to.

Begging to be given bail, the accused was told he would have to come back to court on Monday (20 December) when the Investigating Officer will be availed. Until then, he will remain locked up on remand.

Meanwhile, although Dube kept referring to the complainant as his wife, Tonota Station Commander, Oteng Ngada revealed the two are lovers cohabiting in Tonota’s Rutwang ward.

“It was reported that a misunderstanding started with the man accusing his girlfriend of cheating. It was heard that he then started beating the girl with fists and stabbed her on her thigh. The woman was treated and discharged; she is nursing the wound at home,” said the Superintendent.

Ngada closed by urging people to seek help whenever they have problems in their relationships rather than taking matters into their own hands as it leads them into trouble.
