It is over 11 years since Girly first burst onto the music scene as a backing dancer.
This week marked an exciting new high in the 29-year-old’s career as she walked home from the YAMAs with Best Single Kwaito for her hit ‘Dlala Ngamla’ as well as Best Female artist.
Celeb Edition caught up with the singer born Botshelo Mosweu to find out just how it feels to be the best.
Q. How have you been keeping busy during the lockdown?
I have been exercising and listening to a lot of Beatz for new music.
I have also been using the time to think about how to advance my career.
Q. Speaking of advancing your career, you recently started presenting the Mokaragana show – how did that come about?
I grew up watching Mokaragana you know; I think everyone did!
So when they called out for presenters I auditioned but I never really thought I would get the job.
After the audition, they called me back and offered me the job.
I could not believe it really!
Q. You started off as a backing dancer before making the transition to the full artist.
Tell us about your journey.
Well, I started dancing at a very young age – I think I was about seven.
I remember I used to dance during family gatherings.
At around 14 years I started appearing on music videos dancing.
We then formed a girl’s dance group called Bonadosita which was very famous back then.
We even won My African Dream people’s choice category.
After that, I started dancing for Vee.
After a while, he decided to sign me up under his label but he was also busy with his own career so that never took off.
I was later introduced to Chef Gusto and Skizzo and that is when my solo career really got off the ground.
Q. Your single ‘Dlala Ngamla’ scooped two awards at this weekend’s YAMAs, what’s the inspiration behind the song and did you expect it to do this well?
Well, I knew instantly that it was hit.
I knew it would take me places because we really worked hard.
I worked with the legendary Skizzo and so the combination was a winner from the start.
Q. And going forward, any new music coming up?
Oh yes! I just finished recording a song called ‘Rich n Famous’ and it will be released before the end of this month.
We are just adding the final touches.
From now until year-end I will be releasing singles because the Covid-19 restriction have hampered some of the plans we had for the year.
Q. So do you consider yourself a celebrity?
What a question!
This is Celeb Edition column right? But I would answer this to say I am very popular, very.
Q. A question we ask all our celebs – if you were caught cheating, what is the first thing you would say?
I do not cheat!
If I am not happy I walk away so I don’t think I would ever find myself in that situation.
Q. What would you say has been your greatest achievement?
Well, I just scooped two awards so this surely is the greatest moment I can think of now.
But also performing alongside American rapper EVE and Shaggy was really cool.
Q. Who is your celebrity crush?
Lord T is my celebrity crush.
Q. Five things people don’t know about you?
1. I hate dogs
2. I own heels but I don’t wear them out – I take pics only!
3. I have a seven-year-old called Brooklyn
4. I’m from Kanye
5. I don’t eat sweets!
