Girl, 9, accidentally dies from a swing

INSET: Supt Matlho

Police have confirmed the death of a 9-year-old girl suspected to have accidentally throttled herself with a swing string at Molepolole’s Lesetlheng ward last Friday.

Molepolole Police Station Commander, Superintendent Benedict Matlho, said they were still trying to establish what transpired after the young girl was found hanging from the tree where the makeshift swing was.

“It is suspected that she accidentally died while playing,” explained Superintendent Matlho saying the girl was the eldest among her three younger siblings she had been playing with on the fateful day.

It is suspected that the younger siblings aged five, two, and 18-months did not understand what was happening to their sister and continued playing without calling for help.

The parents were said to have been at a neighbour’s funeral service when the tragedy occurred and the young girl’s motionless body was only found later by her aunt when she arrived from the funeral.

The police revealed that the parents had removed a tyre that had been suspended from the swing strings to minimise accident risks and left the strings loosely hanging.

It is suspected that as the girl was playing with one of the strings, it accidentally twisted into a noose around her neck and ended her young life.

Police responded to the report and rushed the girl to Scottish Livingstone Hospital where she was certified dead by a medical doctor.

Superintendent Matlho advised parents to be more vigilant with the safety of their children and keep harmful objects away from their reach.
