BAG BUT NO BAIL: Moremi Buzwani

Old man accused of breaking wife’s arm with axe butt

A Tonota granddad has been arrested and charged with unlawful wounding after he allegedly broke his wife’s arm with the butt of an axe.

61-year-old Moremi Buzwani is also said to have whacked Batshameki Buzwani, 49, in the head – again using the blunt side – during the alleged axe attack.

The incident played out at the longtime married couple’s home in Mohakamme ward – where they lived with three of their children – on Saturday 13 November. Police are yet to discover what sparked the fallout between husband and wife.

Appearing before Francistown Magistrates Court this Tuesday, the old man begged for bail so that he be allowed to look after his goats and chickens.

“I really fear my livestock will go astray and no one will take care of the Orpington chickens at the fields that help us to feed our children. My wife is not able to go to the fields,” explained the unemployed Moremi.

Switching the basis of his freedom appeal from animals to humans, the suspected wife-beater added, “I also want to be given chance to take care of my children, even to wash for them. And I have P3, 400 that I got from my child which I left at the fields so I want to be assisted to get it.”

However, the old man’s chickens and children will have to survive without him, for the next two weeks at least, as the prosecution successfully secured his remand.

Outlining why Moremi should remain locked up, the Investigating Officer (IO), Sengwenyana Ramogapi stated, “This is a fresh matter pending the investigations, even the complainant is still shocked of what happened. We also fear that if granted bail he might behave the same way he did when he allegedly attacked the wife.”

The Inspector also told court that on the day of the trouble, the accused ran away, leaving the cops to search for him the whole night.

“I do not even know the status of the complainant right now. We only managed to retrieve the axe this morning we suspect was used to commit the offence,” concluded Ramogapi.

The Voice has since established that despite breaking her arm, Batshameki was discharged from hospital the day after she was attacked.

Hammering the final nail into Moremi’s bail hopes, Prosecutor Kenneth Edward insisted it was too soon to entertain such talk.

“The two are legally married, stay together in the same yard, so granting him bail he is likely to interfere with the investigations. And also the complainant is still traumatized, with that we pray that he be remanded in custody for 14 days to complete the investigations and also for the complainant’s temper to cool down.”

Although he insists he doesn’t need it, the old man will indeed have two weeks to cool off behind bars. He will remain in custody until his next court appearance on 30 November.
