TAKING A BREATHER: Nkarabang outside court

Two nights in the cells for elder who threatened wife

An old man spent two nights behind bars this week after allegedly threatening to kill his wife during a heated row last Thursday.

Although he is only facing one count, 78-year-old Moleko Nkarabang, of Lekoba settlement near Jamataka, reportedly also threatened his wife’s brother in his short outburst.

According to court papers, on 11 March, the grey-haired grandfather warned his wife, Gabaeme Moleko, “If I don’t kill you today, I am killing Zulu.”

The matter was reported on Sunday and Nkarabang was subsequently arrested, spending the night in a police cell.

He was arraigned before Francistown Magistrates Court the following morning where the Prosecutor, Sub-Inspector, Isaiah Oabile requested the elder be locked up while police continue their investigations.

“We are still to record witness statements,” explained Oabile, who pleaded for an extra day to summon the Investigating Officer (IO) before court to outline further reasons why Nkarabeng should not be given bail.

Oabile got his wish and the old man was made to spend the night in prison.

However, on Tuesday, the prosecution failed to turn up with the IO as promised, bringing a colleague instead, much to the Magistrate’s displeasure.

Setting the conditions for his bail, Magistrate Game Mooketsi told the accused, “Sign with P500, honour your court appearance without fail, relocate from your home to your uncle’s home and do not interfere with the state witnesses.”

Looking slightly weary after his night in the slammer, Nkarabang was duly set free and is due back in court on 21 April.
