Stranger rapes visitor at neigbour’s house

A movie night with a total stranger at a neighbour’s house ended badly for a 31-year-old woman of Thito ward in Maun this past Valentine’s Day after the man allegedly raped her.

Maun Police Station Commander, Chenamo Orateng, said the woman has reported a rape case against the 41-year-old man.

“The woman left her house to watch movies at her neighbour’s house as it is their norm. Upon arrival, she found the neighbour with a certain gentleman watching movies and she joined them,” revealed Orateng.

Orateng added that the woman is said to have dozed off during the course of the movie and the man launched his attack. “From what has been reported to us, as the evening progressed, the neighbor left the two visitors and went to sleep in her bedroom. The victim fell asleep on the couch while watching movies and she woke up to the man on top of her having sex without her consent.”

The man has since been arrested and charged with rape but at the time of going to print, he was yet to appear before a magistrate court for possible bailout.

Meanwhile, Orateng has expressed his disappointment in men who continue to prey on unsuspecting women and said, “Nobody deserves to be raped, men should stop forcing themselves on women. They are our sisters and we ought to look out for them.”

With a total of seventy-four (74) rape cases recorded in the year 2020 around Maun and an additional six this past month of January, Maun police are concerned for the safety of women and girls in their policing area.

“It is worrisome that more women are still falling victim despite all the efforts done to curb such behaviour. Rape is against the law and if one is found guilty of the same, the minimum sentence they can get is 10 years imprisonment and that shows how serious the offence is,” Orateng added.
